Vehicle Donation Program

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question: Why should I donate my vehicle when I could sell it?

Answer: By donating your vehicle, you may receive greater value for your vehicle as a charitable contribution on your itemized tax return, you will avoid the hassles, cost and time demands of selling your vehicle and, most importantly, you will make a valuable contribution to help adults with mental illness in Northern Virginia.

Question: What types of vehicles do you accept as donations?

Answer: We accept most vehicles and vessels including cars, trucks, trailers, boats and RV's.

Question: Is my donation tax deductible?

Answer: Yes. If you itemize, vehicle donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Individual tax situations vary, so please check with a tax professional to determine what tax benefits you may be entitled to receive. Volunteers of America, our designated vehicle donation vendor, will provide you with receipts to assist you in evaluating the fair market value of your donated vehicle, per IRS guidelines. Again, please consult your tax advisor.

Questions: Does my vehicle need to be in driving condition?

Answer: No. As long as the vehicle is complete (tires, engine, drive line and transmission are intact) and the tires are properly inflated to permit safe towing, we are able to accept most vehicles, whether they run or not.

Please note: Volunteers of America reserves the sole right to evaluate potential donated vehicles to determine if the donation warrents acceptance. In cases where it is determined that the value of the vehicle is less than the cost of towing, the donation will be respectfully declined.

Question: Is your vehicle pick-up service area nationwide?

Answer: Yes, in most cases, we are able to pick up accepted vehicle in the continental United States.

Question: How is the value of my vehicle determined?

Answer: When Volunteers of America picks up your vehicle, you will be given an initial receipt documenting that your vehicle has been received. After your vehicle has been sold at auction, Volunteers of America will send you a second, permenant receipt. If your vehicle sold for more than $500, that sales amount will be listed. We suggest you review IRS Publication 526, which describes IRS requirements regarding the determination of the value of your donated property.

Question: How will the vehicle be picked up?

Answer: We will arrange to have your vehicle towed away by a professional towing company.

Question: How long will it take to pick up my vehicle?

Answer: In most cases, once we have the required information on your vehicle donation, your vehicle will be picked up within 24 to 48 hours.

Question: How can I contact you to make a vehicle donation?

Answer: Please complete and submit our online donation form at: www.carshelpingpeople.org/pathwayhomes or call the toll free vehicle donation line at 1-800-407-2600.
