Help the Homeless Walk – 2016

Help the Homeless Walk – 2016

The 2016 Help the Homeless Walk, hosted by Pathway Homes is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd in Fairfax.  Since 1999, Pathway Homes has encouraged people of all ages to come together for one day in the fall, to make a lasting impact in the lives of others. Participating in a walk is a fun and easy way of giving back to the community.

Pathways has hosted in this fall event for 16 years, raising more than $375,000 in that time to directly fund the critical housing needs of people with mental illnesses.

Mark your calendar, and plan to bring your friends and family. In just one morning, you can make a real impact on the lives of men and women who are homeless in Fairfax County and the Northern Virginia region. 100% of registration fees and donations in support of our walkers go directly to support residents of Pathway’s homes and consumers of Pathway’s supportive services.

Why walk?
cost per day2Because there are 12,215  literally homeless men, women, and children in our region.

What difference can I make?
1 Adult registration = 1 day of housing and supportive services for Pathway Homes' residents.

Pathway Homes is in the midst of our largest, most significant program to secure housing and provide supportive services for the most chronically homeless individuals in our community in our 35-year history.  Since last year, when we launched the new project, more than 100 men and women have left (or will so leave) behind the park benches, bus shelters, highway overpasses, and make-shift camps that have been called "home" for far too long.  When completed, we'll have reduced the number of chronically homeless single adults in Fairfax County by 59% in just two years.

But the real story is not told in numbers, it's the story of the people.  People like Bobby, who became the first to move into his new home.  Bobby is in his early 50s, and was homeless for over a decade.  Upon walking into his new unit, he just stood there, taking it all in.  "This is all mine?" he asked.  He couldn't believe that he now had a real roof over his head, walls and a door for security, and a kitchen where he can cook whatever he wants.  And when he sat down on the mattress, the first real bed he's had in years, he told his counselor, "It's so soft.  I'm going to lay down, and sleep for the next two weeks!"

There are 99 more people like Bobby, about to begin a new chapter in their life.  To be successful, they need YOUR support.

Ways To Participate

Form a Team and Register to Walk
Your compassionate heart hates to see people suffering.  So gather up your friends, your family, your coworkers, your ladies group, your civic club, your Scout troop, your church choir or Sunday school class, your Student Council or your cross-country team!  Register 7 team members, and you've provided a week's worth of housing and support.  Show up with 30 on your team, and you've given someone a home, counseling, and care for an entire month!

This year, special recognition will be given to the team with the most walkers, AND the team that raises the most money, in the following categories:

  • Families
  • Government
  • Business
  • Church groups and religious organizations
  • Primary & secondary school groups,  clubs, and classes
  • University-affiliated groups
  • Adult civic organizations
  • Community youth groups
And if you believe that you have "The Team With The Most", prove it!  Issue a challenge to others in your category to match you!  Everyone loves a little competition; it makes winning more fun!

Walk as an Individual
Don't have a team?  That's OK.  For 16 years individual walkers have been the backbone of our successful walks.  Register yourself, and know that you are providing one day of housing and care for someone in need.
