I would like to tell you how much my life has changed since I received housing through Pathway Homes 17 years ago. Before I came to Pathway Homes, due to some serious medical issues and tragic circumstances, I lost my house and was forced to live with various relatives and friends. I bounced from house to house for quite a while. This was a very difficult and stressful time for me and a time when I felt very alone.
I needed the stability, safety and comfort of my own home, but couldn’t get it at that time. With the help of the church I was able to get an apartment, but then my health issues worsened and I lost my housing again. I went to the homeless shelter, then to transitional housing and finally to a very nice condo provided by Pathway Homes. This housing greatly contributed to improvement of my health and overall well-being. I could feel safe again and had my independence and privacy back. Because of the stable housing, I was finally able to focus on addressing the issues that contributed to my previous homelessness. I got the help and support I needed, and felt hopeful that I could live a good life.
I have a roommate and we have been friends since she moved in. We are a great support for one another. With God’s help and the help of the Pathway Homes counselors, we learned how to communicate effectively and support each other during difficult times. Also, my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ helped me to get through rough times. I continue to go to church every week and participate in weekly Bible Study. My relationship with God was, and will continue to be, my strength in life. It helps me to stay determined and focused on my goals.
I am very grateful for the opportunity that Pathway Homes provided for me. I appreciate the ongoing support of my counselors and therapist who help me advocate for my needs in the community and during doctor’s appointments, as well as with budgeting, making right food choices and living a healthy life overall.
I hope that my story will provide some encouragement to someone reading this today. I want you to know that there are many helpful resources within Fairfax County and affordable housing such as the one provided by Pathway Homes.
I prefer not to think about what my life would look like without having faith in God and a stable home. I will continue to focus on taking care of my health, strengthening my faith, volunteering and maintaining my housing.
